SarahPalin_Virginia10_13_08In a couple of weeks’ time, the Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, will stand down.  Her Lieutenant Governor, Sean Parnell, will assume her duties.

For nearly a year, this God-fearing woman has endured endless verbal attacks on her and her family.  I’m not going to review them here, but they were jaw-droppingly awful.  From the mass media to the internet, people spewed their hate of this woman.

Sarah Palin might not be from the elite, but she is 100% real.  She represents the heartland of America.  Many of us who grew up in small towns recognise this type of woman.  We knew them as neighbours, Cub Scout den mothers, Girl Scout leaders, teachers and volunteers. Some were farmers’ wives who managed the household whilst their husbands and sons were out in the fields. They raised their families well and worshipped at church on Sundays.  They weren’t perfect, but they accepted their mistakes and did what they could to set things right.  They had bags of common sense.  They never cried over themselves or played victim; they just got on with their work, whether that was making a batch of cookies or holding down a job.

I don’t understand how anyone can hate another person.  I also don’t understand how anyonPalin McCain 2008e could find Gov Palin threatening.  I guess I just don’t have the same ‘values’ they do.  How could anyone spread vicious rumours about a loving, responsible mother of five?  How could anyone decry a Downs Syndrome child?  How could anyone spread vile innuendo about her two daughters?  It’s sick and disgusting.

I have read, by way of explanation, that people ‘hated’ the way she posed young Trig on her hip, a normal way a mum used to stand with her child.  They also ‘hated’ the fact she didn’t abort him when she discovered that he had Downs Syndrome.  They ‘hated’ that she had a handsome husband and a stable marriage.  They ‘hated’ that she could hold down a job and maintain a good home life.  They ‘hated’ her belief in Our Lord Jesus Christ.   They ‘hated’ that she upheld the Alaska State Constitution.  They ‘hated’ that she tried to do the right thing personally and professionally.

So, they fabricated stories about her.  When these turned out to be false, they didn’t correct them with the same fanfare with which they spread these allegations.  The Progressives (new Democrats) unleashed their bile.  The GOP (Republicans) didn’t stand up for her;  some wanted another VP (and Presidential) candidate.

Country FirstThe only people who defended her were everyday Americans who took a day off work and travelled miles to see her and Senator McCain at their rallies.  Hillary Clinton’s more grassroots supporters — the PUMAs — came out in Gov Palin’s favour, too.  These two groups are the future of America.

th_sarahpalinforVPDespite all the speculation over the weekend, it remains to be seen what Sarah Palin’s next move will be.  I hope and pray that her detractors (to put it politely) will leave her in peace.  For the short time during which she energised much of the American populace, her admirers are grateful.

All best wishes, Sarah, in whatever you choose to do.

If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also (John 15:20).

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven for, in the same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10-12).
