Prayer Book for Spouses Daily Mail article-1210519-06417808000005DC-827_233x423What is one to think about praying before sexual congress with one’s spouse?

The idea is to pray for a loving, caring coupling and welcoming the gift of life which may follow.

On September 3, 2009, the Daily Mail reported that the Catholic Truth Society in the UK has issued meditations and prayers for couples.  The book, called Prayer Book for Spouses, aims at ‘purifying their intentions’ prior to sexual intercourse.

The 64-page book costs £1.95 and is intended to enrich the matrimonial experience for Roman Catholic couples.

The Mail interviewed the Rt Revd Paul Hendricks, Auxiliary Bishop for Southwark (London), who told the paper:

‘I suppose it is a bit idealistic but it is recognising that God is at the heart of the marriage relationship between husband and wife,’ he said.

‘It is important for the Church to affirm the value of marriage and family life and I suppose this is a particular way of doing that.

‘Perhaps it is something that has not been tried, certainly for a while  –  I can’t remember seeing something like that before.’

Married couples can use the book for help with all stages of matrimonial life, including pregnancy, raising a family and caring for elderly parents.
