In 2015, I wrote a post, ‘The story of priest holes in Tudor England’.

One of my readers, CherryPie of Cherie’s Place, has been to two of these stately homes which had priest holes — priest hides — for Catholic priests during the tumultuous Reformation period in England.

I highly recommend her posts on Harvington Hall and Dorney Court. They are beautifully written and illustrated.

Priest holes — hides — are a fascinating and little-known part of English history. The owners of these houses were able to conceal these rooms rather well from soldiers and other authorities who went to arrest Catholic priests for treason. Many of these small rooms served as chapels, complete with everything a priest needed to say Mass.

I look forward to reading more about these rooms on Cherie’s Place when she visits Stoner in due course.
