I was heartened to see two recent videos of Americans of Italian descent object to the tearing down of Christopher Columbus statues in the United States.

Everywhere else in the world — especially Spanish-speaking countries — Christopher Columbus is viewed as a hero.

Not so in today’s United States.

Language alert in the two powerful videos below.

First up is the actor, director and singer Robert Davi. After him, we have an anonymous American of Italian descent who also puts verbal pedal to the metal. Both are short and well worth watching:

Italians did not have an easy ride when they settled in America, which they, rightly, considered to be a land of promise. They — along with many other immigrants during the 19th and early 20th centuries — were not treated well at all.

In fact, a lot of European immigrants — not only Italians — were treated like dirt. They were considered to be too dark, too dirty, too unkempt, too odorous — all because they were poor.

They were called names, the likes of which are not repeated in polite company these days:

But, all of that has been forgotten.

A few factual reminders follow.

When European immigrants landed at Ellis Island outside of New York City for ‘processing’, it was no treat. Many feared the health inspection staff would send them back on the next ship. Their main worry was about married couples or families being separated during that time. A number of extended family members did not make the journey in the first place, because they had health conditions that could prohibit them from entering the country. If you couldn’t walk well or had visible ailments, you didn’t make the grade.

There was no welfare state at that time, either. So, immigrant men and boys had to find work — fast. Lodging was another issue, especially for families. Some had sponsors — relatives — in other parts of the country, e.g. the Midwest or the West Coast. Sponsored immigrants had to find the money to travel further, if they did not have it already.

So, there was no welfare provision for public housing, food or medical care.

NOTHING.

You provided for yourself and your family or you went back where you came from:

The Irish were treated poorly in the Americas even further back, starting in the days of the Thirteen Colonies:

The two groups can combine forces to fight off today’s Marxist revisionism:

The institution of Columbus Day by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892 was a national apology for the lynching of 11 Italian immigrants by bigots in New Orleans on March 14, 1891.

Even now, that is still the largest number of people lynched on a single day in the United States. Yes, they were Italian.

The statues of Christopher Columbus in the United States were a further way of apologising to Italian immigrants who had been badly treated during their early years in the United States:

The revisionists do not know enough history of North America.

If they did, they never would have come out with their nonsense:

Christopher Columbus has a lot of support, even in Canada:

A few Britons also replied to Robert Davi’s tweet, moved by his video.

For those who never learned the history of immigration over a century ago, please try to become better informed before accusing everyone else of evil.

Most immigrants had a very hard time settling in, but they worked very hard for what they earned. They also passed those values of hard work and patriotism on to their descendants.

February 2019 turned out to be violent for some supporters of President Trump.

Four real hate attacks took place that month.

University

On Tuesday, February 19, a Trump supporter was violently punched in the face at UC Berkeley for manning a stand for conservative students’ organisation Turning Point USA (TPUSA). The victim, Hayden Williams, is not a member of TPUSA, but was volunteering for them at the time.

On February 21, Fox News reported (emphases mine):

University of California police want the public’s help tracking down a suspect whose brutal alleged assault of a conservative activist on the Berkeley campus was caught on video.

The campus police website said that two men on Tuesday approached a table where the activist was recruiting members to his group, and an argument ensued. The alleged victim, identified by Turning Point USA as Hayden Williams, held up his cell phone and began filming the two men who were allegedly harassing him. One of the two men knocked over the table, police said, and then punched Williams several times, causing injuries to his face. Much of the incident was captured on a witness’ cellphone, but it was unclear what, if anything, Williams may have said before the attack.

The suspects had left by the time police arrived.

Although Williams was helping Turning Point USA, he is not actually a member of the group. Williams is campus representative for Leadership Institute, according to Campus Reform, a conservative news site that the institute operates.

A witness told Fox News the recruitment table had a sign that said: “Hate Crime Hoaxes Hurt Real Victims,” in reference to the case of “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, who is accused of staging a bias attack against himself in downtown Chicago last month.

On its website, Campus Reform, which interviewed Williams, reported that the alleged attacker cursed at the activist, calling him a racist and threatened to shoot him.

The Berkeley incident is the latest in a growing series of ideological clashes that have turned violent on college campuses. Conservative groups claim students who lean to the right have been targeted for harassment and even assault over their views.

That evening, Hayden Williams spoke to Sean Hannity about the incident:

TPUSA founder and president Charlie Kirk tweeted:

A few days later, a conservative organisation offered a $50,000 reward to bring the attacker to justice:

Just a few days later, on Friday, March 1, University of California — UC — Police made an arrest. Gateway Pundit reported (italics in the original):

On Friday, Zachary Greenberg was identified and arrested by UC Police — law enforcement booked him into jail at 1 PM.

CBS San Francisco reported that police will formally present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of the filing of criminal charges, the university said.

That evening Fox’s Laura Ingraham interviewed Hayden Williams and his lawyer, Harmeet Dhillon, who is experienced in representing conservative victims of violence and hate (start at 11:06):

On Saturday, March 2, President Trump welcomed Williams onstage to say a few words. He then praised Williams for being able to ‘take a punch’, which, he added, the student did ‘for all of us’. How true:

Here’s the full CPAC segment. Trump also asks Williams to request that Harmeet Dhillon sue the university, the city and the state. Trump had high praise for her:

High school

On Tuesday, February 26, a young man wearing a yellow vest fought to remove a Trump flag from a younger student at a high school in New Mexico:

A Twitter account holder published the school’s number, then attempted to call, only to find out the number was not in service:

Someone tweeted the name of the school principal, who did not reply:

Restaurant

That same day, across the nation in Falmouth, Massachusetts, a Brazilian woman who has been in the US illegally for 20 years, was taken into ICE custody following an assault on a young man wearing a MAGA hat in a local Mexican restaurant. The assault had taken place earlier that month, at which time the woman was promptly arrested and released by local police.

After her ICE arrest, she was subsequently released, pending an upcoming hearing on March 20. This story ran and ran on the Howie Carr Show (Boston) last week.

CBS affiliate WBZ in Boston reported (photo at the link):

Police said Rosiane Santos walked by Bryton Turner as he was eating dinner at Casa Vallarta and knocked the hat off his head. She then allegedly confronted him verbally.

Turner recorded video showing some of the confrontation.

Falmouth Police charged Santos with disorderly conduct following the incident earlier this month. On Tuesday, ICE took her into custody.

“Deportation officers with ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team arrested Rosiane Santos, an unlawfully present citizen of Brazil, today near Falmouth, Massachusetts,” said ICE spokesman John Mohan.

Turner said he was just trying to eat a nice meal when Santos grabbed his hat supporting President Trump.

“It’s just a hat at the end of the day,” Turner told WBZ after the incident. “I don’t really understand why people can’t just express themselves anymore, everybody has to get mad.”

Santos was later released from ICE custody. She has been ordered to appear before an immigration judge for removal proceedings.

Heavy has two short videos of the incident.

Retail outlet

Also on February 26, an 81-year old New Jersey man was assaulted at a ShopRite store in Franklin Township because he, too, was wearing a MAGA hat. The New York Post reported:

The victim was confronted by an unknown man over the hat just before 3:30 p.m. Monday in Franklin Township in Somerset County, officials said.

County authorities, who are working with local cops on the investigation, would not release any further details.

The injured man, who is a Franklin Township resident, refused medical treatment.

Pathological behaviour, especially towards an elderly man.

Conclusion

Anyone who thinks these attacks are outliers should read the tweet below listing the incidents that occurred between June and August 2018:

The verbal and physical assaults — as well as battery — on Trump supporters are very real, indeed.

The rhetoric about migration along the southern US border has been astonishing. Astonishingly bad.

And the Democrats are good at being astonishingly bad.

Diamond and Silk remind us of Dem priorities, present — and past:

Then, there are ways of seeking asylum, but throwing stones is neither a good idea nor a good look:

One Democrat from New York — a freshman Congresswoman in 2019 — thinks she knows. Candace ‘Blexit’ Owens rightly took exception:

Correct. I do not recall hearing any history of Jewish families who sought refuge from Germany by throwing stones at American or British authorities.

The same holds true for other real refugees.

‘Asking to be considered a refugee’ does not involve throwing stones or fighting with border patrols.

Then, there’s the social gospel brigade, who think that removing illegals is wrong. Remember, illegal entry is still a felony in the United States, whether the law is enforced or not. It is also possible that the man ICE is attempting to apprehend committed another crime which warrants his arrest. But the church people sing ‘Amazing Grace’ and chant ‘Let him go, let him go’:

The tweet is correct in citing St Paul.

Social gospel folks are Christian cafeteria folks, picking and choosing what from Scripture they will honour as convenient to their agenda.

It would be better for them if they picked up a Bible and studied it.

Until last week, an Independent candidate for Seattle’s city council was running for local elections in 2019.

His is one of the best political adverts I’ve ever seen. Please take two minutes to watch it:

Christopher Rufo has made documentaries for Netflix and PBS, assignments that have taken him around the world. The video shows him with his wife and two sons. Clearly, they are a happy family.

He wants to clean up Seattle, which has become a filthy, depressing place in recent years, and to lower taxes for the city’s hardest hit workers. He says that Seattle doesn’t need more money; it needs better leadership.

What’s not to like?

The radical left went after him, just as they did Tucker Carlson, using the Cuban approach. They harassed one of his sons on his school’s Facebook page and tried to get his wife fired from her job with Microsoft.

On November 14, The Daily Caller reported that, because of the horrific abuse his family has had to take, Christopher Rufo has regrettably dropped out of the 2019 local race. Excerpts follow, emphases mine.

Rufo clearly blamed the radical left:

An independent candidate for Seattle City Council announced on Wednesday that he is dropping out of the race, due to what he described as racial and sexual harassment of his wife by left-wing activists.

Christopher Rufo, a documentary filmmaker, made combatting Seattle’s “activist class” and “the ideologues on our city council” a central part of his campaign for election in 2019.

He sent an email to his supporters explaining the situation. It says, in part:

I had hoped that this would be a campaign of ideas, but I quickly discovered that the activists in this city have no interest in ideas. Since the campaign launch, they have harassed and threatened my family nonstop. I was prepared to take the heat, but unfortunately, they have focused their hatred on my wife and children.

They’ve made vile racist attacks against my wife, attempted to get her fired from Microsoft, and threatened sexual violence. They have even posted hateful messages to my 8-year-old son’s school Facebook page. I know that as the race progresses, the activists will ratchet up their hate-machine and these attacks will intensify significantly

my primary responsibility is to make sure my family is healthy, happy, and safe. That’s not possible in our current political climate, which has been overtaken by polarization and the ever-present threat of violence.

I’ve learned that our problem here in Seattle is much deeper than the city council’s policies—we have created a culture of intolerance that is deeply destructive to the common good. I plan to spend the next few months reflecting on this experience and charting a way forward in a series of essays. I hope that some positive benefit can come out of this disappointment.

Rufo has pledged to refund all of the donations to his campaign, which are upwards of $12,000.

How sad for him and his family. They look like good people.

I cannot imagine going after anyone, especially someone from an ethnic minority or a child. What is wrong with these people, who accuse everyone else of being intolerant?

Where does this end?

Keep in mind that Rufo is probably not a conservative, and is likely to be more of a libertarian.

The Daily Caller‘s article directs readers to another one focussing on Seattle, ‘Seattle Council Member Using Gov Resources To Organize Anti-Trump Protests’, dated January 4, 2017, a few weeks before President Trump’s inauguration:

A Seattle city council member is openly using government resources to organize anti-Trump protests in collaboration with a radical socialist organization.

Councilmember Kshama Sawant posted an open letter to her “fellow activists” on the City of Seattle’s taxpayer-funded website, urging participation in anti-Trump “Occupy Inauguration” protests organized by the Socialist Alternative Seattle. More than 3,500 people have already committed to joining the protests, according to the event’s Facebook page.

“A right-wing anti-worker bigot has been elected President. Donald Trump’s cabinet is a who’s who of multi-billionaires with long records of hostility towards workers, the labor movement, women’s rights, and the planet,” Sawant charges in her letter, which was posted on New Years Eve. She goes on to urge visitors to the government website to engage in “resistance” to the president-elect.

‘Government resources’ is better translated as ‘taxpayer money’.

How can a city council allocate tax money towards protests — of any kind?

Socialist Alternative Seattle, influential in the councilwoman’s campaign and behind the pre-Inauguration protest:

stands in “political solidarity” with the Committee for a Workers’ International, a far-left organization that calls for a “Marxist programme” to end capitalism.

In short, Sawant is using taxpayer resources to organize anti-Trump protests sponsored by a radical socialist organization that brags about its ties to global Marxists

Sawant is the vice-chair of the city council’s committee on civil rights. She did not return a request for comment by press time.

Unbelievable.

Back to Christopher Rufo’s — and Tucker Carlson’s — situation. As one of my readers commented on Saturday:

These orchestrated mob attacks on political dissidents are outrageous and cannot be tolerated. I lay the blame for this escalating violence at the feet of Jeff Sessions, the former US Attorney General.

The first act of terrorism occurred shortly after Donald Trump took office. A Democratic party activist shot Congressman Steve Scalise and several others. Had Jeff Sessions reacted in a decisive manner and declared that violence against Republican officials will not be tolerated and demanded that Democratic party officials condemn the violence, disavow violence as a political tool, and take positive actions to insure that there are no further acts of violence, I believe that we would not see the mob attacks on dissidents we see today.

If local police refused to arrest and local courts refused to prosecute political terrorists, then Jeff Sessions should have stepped in and arrested and prosecuted the terrorists under federal statutes. Recall when Eric Holder was Attorney General, if a local court decision didn’t go the way the Obama administration wanted it to go, Holder would arrest and prosecute the individual under federal statutes.

I couldn’t agree more.

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker must now step up to the plate, say ‘Enough!’ and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Americans — from Independents to Libertarians to Republicans — cannot be held hostage or abused by groups of unhinged leftists who belong either in jail or mental health facilities.

Yesterday’s post was about the chilling attacks on Tucker Carlson and his family.

A November 10 article on Breitbart, ‘Tucker Carlson Antifa Riot Mimics Cuban Mob Attacks’, discusses the long-standing tactic of the totalitarian government’s support for terrorising freedom-loving dissidents.

Excerpts follow, emphases mine.

Despite Cuba having been Communist for six decades, this personalised terrorism is still going on:

Pro-democracy and right-leaning political activists, journalists, and artists 90 miles from our shores, fighting for their rights in communist Cuba, have faced similar mob attacks on their homes for years. Unlike the Carlson incident, in Cuba, the government actively organizes the mobs. The riots are so common they have a name: actos de repudio, or “acts of repudiation.”

In the past several years, since dictator Raúl Castro took over for late dictator brother Fidel, Cuba has endeavored to export the practice of actos de repudio, attacking the presence of dissidents at international summit events, violently beating them in public on foreign soil, and even using mob behavior to silence American diplomats at the United Nations.

Actos de repudio, the article says, can be defined as follows:

bully mobs [used] to intimidate, instill fear, and to restrict democracy activist’s freedom of movement and speech.

In Tucker Carlson’s case, the DC police have had the good sense to term the attack on his home as a hate crime:

According to the official police report, the mob vandalized the Carlson home, driveway, and the car parked there by scrawling various leftist messages all over them. The mob also broke the front door, nearly managing to enter the home to presumably hurt Carlson’s family. Washington, DC, police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Carlson sees this for what it is — restriction on his thoughts and speech:

Carlson accurately described the attack as an attempt to silence his political thoughts in a subsequent interview Thursday night on Fox News.

“This has a chilling effect on people’s ability to speak and to think freely. That’s the point,” he argued. “It’s totalitarian in its intent. We should fight it” …

“What’s it like to find out that your wife is hiding in the pantry because people are threatening her? I mean, it’s upsetting,” he noted.

Meanwhile, back in Cuba, female churchgoers have been attacked with severe actos de repudio:

With some notable exceptions on the far left, mainstream political observers have condemned the attack as fundamentally anti-American and argued that such mob tyranny is a scary new development in political speech, practically unprecedented. Those who view this as a novel threat have clearly not studied the Ladies in White, a group of pro-democracy peace activists in Cuba who experience some form of this harassment on a weekly basis.

Unlike the Antifa event, the Ladies in White, and in particular their leader Berta Soler, face similar attacks organized and funded by their own government. The women, whose sole act of protest is to attempt to go to Catholic Mass on Sundays, have faced beatings, stoning, tarring at the hands of these mobs.

Here’s a 2016 video of an attack outside the headquarters for the Ladies in White:

The video also shows mobs destroying media equipment.

These mobs attack artists, too:

Below is a mob attack against Tania Bruguera, a Cuban artist who courted the ire of the regime by planning an art installation consisting only of a microphone placed in the Plaza of the Revolution in Havana for the use of anyone in the public to say whatever they want. Bruguera has an official Cuban police officer assigned to monitor her at all times.

Cuba began exporting mob violence three years ago:

In 2015, the Cuban government decided to begin exporting actos de repudio after being invited to the Summit of the Americas for the first time. At the time, Latin American leaders like Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, corrupt Brazilian socialist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and similarly corrupt Argentine former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner hijacked the summit to invite Cuba despite the nation not meeting the Organization of American States’ democracy requirements.

The Cuban state agents used the invitation to stage actos de repudio in Panama. The agents physically beat a small group of dissidents who gathered to honor Cuban founding father José Martí in Panama City.

These mobs do not respect human rights or the rule of law, even international law:

In a memorable 2016 acto de repudio, a mob made a bonfire out of copies of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a reminder that its ideals do not apply to them.

They also disrupted a discussion of human rights at the UN this year.

Nothing happens to them at home or abroad, so the violence continues.

Frances Martel, the author of the Breitbart article, warns that this is unlikely to be a short-term trend.

Being nice to totalitarian regimes doesn’t help, either:

The extensive, repulsive history of mob attacks in Cuba similar to what Carlson experienced – and their increased frequency abroad since 2015, when the Obama administration flooded Cuba with foreign investment in return for nothing – is a reminder that interacting with foreign regimes does not necessarily make them freer. Sometimes, values flow in the opposite direction, resulting in authoritarian minorities in the free country becoming emboldened and infected with the same tactics common in the repressive regime.

How terrible that such violence has been taking root in the United States since 2016, starting with the Trump and other conservative rallies. Now we have mobs attacking media personalities, ICE and who knows what next?

Law enforcement is not doing much to stop it, especially in West Coast cities such as Portland.

It would be a shame if these mobs become commonplace in America.

Last weekend was a busy one for Hamburg.

The city hosted the G20 conference and also had to cope with the usual demonstrations as well as wanton destruction.

G20 conferences nearly always attract protesters, but a number of riots and looting took place this year.

These did not end until well after the G20 conference concluded.

On July 9, Fox News reported (emphases mine):

Anti-globalization activists rioted for a third consecutive night in Hamburg early Sunday even after Group of 20 leaders had already left the northern Germany city.

Police again used water cannon trucks against rioters attacking them with iron rods and pavement blocks. They arrested 186 protesters and temporarily detained another 225 people. Officials say 476 officers have been injured in the violence since Thursday. The number of injured protesters wasn’t clear.

A reader commented:

The organizers of the “protest” are communist/anarchist professional rioters, working for communist front groups such as “International A.N.S.W.E.R.” (funding from Soros). It is easy for communists from all over Europe to get to Hamburg by train. I would bet that [New York City mayor] “Bolshevik Bill” deBlasio is not the only American “protesting” in Hamburg. Some of the reds are probably veterans of Berkeley, Seattle, and Occupy Wall Street.

That is probably true.

Mayor de Blasio’s trip to Hamburg to support the protesters did not go down well with New Yorkers. The New York Post featured him on the front page with this headline:

The day after an NYPD cop was executed, Mayor de Blasio jets off to Germany to rally lefties against the G-20 AND DON’T COME BACK

Twitchy had more:

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was getting an earful over his decision to hop a flight to Hamburg, Germany to hang around the G20 summit, despite the fact that his own city had just witnessed the assassination of a police officer and a serious train derailment. The trip also required him to skip out on a swearing-in ceremony for new police officers at a very sensitive time.

Of course the criticism didn’t stop global citizen de Blasio from burning some jet fuel, and on Saturday the mayor retweeted some local coverage of him and his son surveying part of the city that might or might not have been set on fire by anarchists

Reuters had a report on July 8 saying that Germans were angry at Angela Merkel and the violence:

Germans expressed anger on Sunday over violence that hit a G20 world leaders’ summit in Hamburg, raising awkward questions for Chancellor Angela Merkel less than three months before an election.

About 20,000 police struggled to contain several hundred anti-capitalist militants who torched cars, looted shops and hurled Molotov cocktails and stones during the July 7-8 summit …

German newspapers devoted far more space to pictures of police firing water cannon onto hooded anarchists and other protestors than they did to Merkel’s diplomatic balancing act with fellow leaders of major world economies …

an Emnid poll showed that a majority of Germans, 59 percent, believed the riots damage the image of their country – even though violence has affected a number of international meetings around the world over the years.

Merkel was forced to defend her choice of Hamburg, saying other cities, like London, had hosted similar meetings. Hamburg, a seaport which is Germany’s second biggest city, has a strong radical leftist tradition. It was also home to an al Qaeda cell that carried out the 9/11 attacks on U.S. targets in 2001.

Merkel had wanted to demonstrate to G20 partners, including Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, her commitment to freedom of speech and rejected the notion that some cities were out of bounds as summit venues.

The strategy has backfired, said some commentators …

Seeking to limit the damage from the security problems before the Sept. 24 parliamentary election, Merkel has promised compensation to Hamburg residents whose property was damaged

No doubt most of Big Media focussed only on the peaceful protests. So, below are more pictures and short videos of the violence.

A German provided an inside view on 4chan/pol/:

Watch looters ransack a supermarket. Stay with the video until the end:

Radicalised thieves emerged calmly with all sorts of stolen merchandise:

This video from a journalist shows more of the aftermath:

Spare a thought for the staff having to clean this up:

The young environmentalist terrorists set fires by night …

And by day …

The DPA — Deutsche Presse-Agentur — showed what commercial areas of Hamburg looked like on the morning of Saturday, July 8. They included the aforementioned supermarket (photo lower right):

Of course, shop owners and managers could have paid protection money to these terrorists!

The wanton destruction even spread to residential streets:

Of course:

Tomorrow’s post is about the G20 conference.

In closing, I know a few normal people — including the elderly — who empathise with protests such as these. Why? These anarchists and thieves are harming people, destroying property and businesses.

Inhiding thebreakthroughorg the United States, October’s health messages focus on the ever-present dangers of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is an immediate health hazard, unlike the big lie about second-hand smoke.

One blogger looking at violence this month, not only at home but also at work and online, is my reader Secret Angel. I have added her site to my blogroll (first tranche).

I would encourage Britain’s Tobacco Control advocates to change tack and actually work to help those who are in immediate danger from spouses (men or women), ‘boyfriends’, school bullies, narcissistic bosses and others.

How many of the aforementioned are responsible for suicides? What is more tragic than to read about (yet) another child who comes home from school and quietly hangs himself because he has suffered systematic physical or psychological abuse from his classmates?

How many spouses are responsible for maiming their wives or husbands, causing them to live in fear?

What about men and women who go to work every day only to be subject to psychological abuse by a a narcissistic superior who may be responsible for their physical or mental illness?

These are immediate health hazards which result in damaged or dead individuals, broken families and dysfunctional atmospheres. We’ll never know how many people are actually affected by domestic, school or workplace violence. Most cases never make the newspapers or online media.

Yet, smoking is the immediate number one health hazard?

Again, I would appeal to Tobacco Control to examine their hearts and change their line of work.

But then, that’s probably asking for the impossible, since Tobacco Control are also part of the bullying culture.

What all of us reading this can do, however, is to join Secret Angel in praying for those who are in danger from violence and verbal abuse, wherever it takes place.
